Since the first gods in Greek mythology are personifications of parts of the world or fundamental principles, there is no distinction between the origin of the world and the origin of the gods. Numerous myths deal with their origin, but none could prevail as universally valid. The most widespread creation story is Hesiod's Theogony, in which an attempt was made for the first time to create a comprehensive genealogy of the gods from various myths. Most later mythographers build on the theogony, but sometimes differ significantly in detail. A canonical family tree of Greek gods could never be established. In theogony, chaos is placed at the beginning. In Hesiod the world is not created out of nothing; there is matter, but no form and no order. Out of the chaos arises as the first generation of gods the earth Gaia (first in "earth form", later in "human form"), the underworld Tartaros, love Eros, the darkness Erebos and the night Nyx. From the union of Nyx and Erebos comes the day Hemera and the air Aither, Nyx gives birth to a series of deities who are either personifications of phenomena associated with the night or of human evils. Most of the Greek world of gods is traced back to Gaia, who produces the sea of Pontos, the mountains of Ourea and the sky of Uranus from herself and, in particular, has a large number of other descendants with Uranus, including the Titans. In addition to the origin of the gods, the theogony tells of the sequence of rulers over the world, which plays a central role in most Greek myths of origin. The first ruler of the world, Uranus, is emasculated and deposed by his son, the Titan Kronos, and the Titans rule the world. The Titans are in turn overthrown by Kronos' son Zeus, after which the reign of the Olympian gods begins. Zeus secures his rule by devouring his pregnant wife Metis, since her unborn son was destined to take Zeus' place. Another creation myth that has gained some traction is the Orphic creation story. Although the Orphic creation myths that have been handed down do not allow conclusions to be drawn about a canonical version, there are some similarities. At the beginning stands the time Chronos, from which descended Aither, Erebos and Chaos. Chronos creates an egg in Aither from which Phanes, the creator of all things, hatches. Phanes relinquishes power to his daughter and wife Nyx, who in turn hands it over to her son Uranus. When Zeus takes over, he devours Phanes and recreates the world. He marries Kore and becomes the father of Zagreus-Dionysos to whom he passes on his reign.
